The silence in my chambers was a familiar cloak, woven from the hushed fear of my dominion. It clung to me, a second skin as potent as the shadows that danced at the periphery of vision. For millennia, I had cultivated this quiet, this absolute control, understanding that in the cacophony of Hell, true power lay in the stillness. Yet, within that stillness, a new sound had begun to echo, a discordant note that vibrated against the hard, polished surfaces of my existence. It was the sound of Evan Aris, breathing.

He was a fragile thing, this human, plucked from the swirling mists of the mortal realm and deposited at my feet. Innocence was a currency I’d long ago ceased to value, yet in him, it possessed a strange, almost defiant glow. His eyes, the colour of a storm-tossed sea, held no flicker of the terror I expected, only a bewildered curiosity that pricked at my composure. I had interrogated him, of course, with the usual methods designed to shatter lesser beings into a thousand shards of confession. He had yielded nothing but a blank slate, a void where memories should have been. And that void, paradoxically, had become the most intriguing enigma I had ever encountered.

“You ask the same questions,” Evan’s voice, soft as moth wings, broke the quiet. He sat on the edge of a velvet-draped chair, his hands clasped loosely in his lap. He looked… untouched, as if the very air of Hell recoiled from marring his delicate form. “And I give the same answers.”
