The air in the throne room had grown thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of something akin to ozone after a storm. It was an atmosphere I had cultivated, a deliberate distillation of dread and deference, designed to keep any notion of sentimentality at bay. Yet, Evan Aris, with his unnervingly calm gaze and the faintest tremor in his hands, was a dilution I hadn't accounted for. He sat before me, not in chains, as protocol dictated for such… anomalies, but on a low stool, bathed in the dim, perpetual twilight of my court. It was a concession, a foolish one, born from a curiosity that gnawed at the edges of my carefully constructed control.
"You claim no memory," I stated, the words a low rumble, each syllable carrying the weight of my dominion. My voice, usually a blade honed to a razor's edge, felt strangely dulled, as if an unseen hand had blunted its keenness. "Yet you exist. A human, adrift in the very heart of damnation. Explain this impossibility, Aris."
He met my gaze, and for a fleeting instant, I saw not fear, but a profound sadness. It was a fleeting thing, gone as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a quiet resilience that was, in itself, a defiance. "I cannot, Lord Vale," he replied, his voice soft, yet clear, cutting through the oppressive silence. "I remember nothing. The first sensation I recall was the chill of your dungeons, the echoing clang of steel. Before that… there is only a void."
