He watched me, his gaze unwavering, yet devoid of the fear that usually plastered itself upon the faces of those who met my eyes. “You are silent,” he murmured, his voice a low, melodic ripple that cut through the heavy quiet. It was not a question, but an observation, delivered with the same gentle curiosity he might apply to a peculiar insect or a wilting flower.
