Chapter 14
A Shared Vulnerability
A moment of shared vulnerability occurs between Lucien and Evan, a crack in their carefully constructed facades. Lucien feels a dangerous thawing of his frozen heart.
The silence in my chambers was a tapestry woven from the screams of the damned and the hushed whispers of my own thoughts. It was a familiar comfort, a shroud I’d worn for centuries, insulating me from the messy, unpredictable currents of emotion. Tonight, however, the silence felt… thin. Stretched. As if it might tear and reveal something I wasn't prepared to see. Evan Aris sat before me, his hands clasped loosely in his lap, his gaze – so unnervingly steady – fixed on the intricate patterns of the obsidian floor. He was a disruption, a rogue note in the symphony of my existence, and the dissonance he created was as unwelcome as it was undeniable.
I watched him, my eyes tracing the delicate curve of his jaw, the subtle rise and fall of his chest. He was a fragile thing, this human, yet there was a core of resilience within him that defied the harsh realities of my domain. He had been brought to me under circumstances I had yet to fully comprehend, a ghost of a past he couldn't recall. And with each passing moment, with each carefully worded question I posed and each hesitant answer he offered, he chipped away at the icy edifice I had so painstakingly constructed around myself.
"You seem… calm," I finally said, the words a low rumble in the quiet room. My voice, usually a weapon, felt strangely hesitant, lacking its customary edge.
