The air in my chambers was thick, as it always was, with the scent of brimstone and the silent weight of power. Yet, tonight, an unwelcome guest had disturbed its stillness. Evan Aris. The human. He sat before me, a stark silhouette against the infernal glow of the hearth, his gaze steady, unnervingly so. I had interrogated him, prodded, dissected his every word, searching for the lie, the motive, the reason for his mere existence in my domain. But he offered only silence, a void that mirrored my own, and a resilience that pricked at the edges of my carefully constructed apathy.
“You claim ignorance,” I finally stated, my voice a low rumble that echoed the discontent settling in my chest. “Yet, you are here. A trespasser of the highest order.” I leaned forward, my fingers steepled, the obsidian of my rings glinting. “Hell does not suffer fools, human. Nor does it tolerate the unexplained.”
He met my gaze, his eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, held no fear, no supplication, only a quiet bewilderment. “I… I do not know how I came to be here, Lord Vale. My memories are… a blank canvas.”
