Echoes of the Past
A disoriented woman, The Echo, appears. She shares Elias's fragmented memories and fear. Is she a fellow victim, or something more, a piece of his own lost self?
The air, thick and cloying, tasted of dust and something metallic, like old pennies. It clung to my tongue, a constant reminder of the pervasive stillness that had settled over this place. I’d been wandering for what felt like an eternity, the same desolate landscape stretching in every direction, a canvas of muted browns and greys under a sky that offered no sun, no moon, just an unchanging, oppressive twilight. The symbols, etched into the very fabric of the ground and the occasional jagged rock, were still a mystery, their meaning as elusive as my own past.
Then, a sound. A faint, ragged breath, like a dying ember struggling to catch. It cut through the silence, a delicate thread of life in this barren expanse. I froze, every nerve ending alight with a mixture of hope and dread. Had I finally found another soul in this forsaken realm? Or was this something else, something meant to lure me deeper into the unknown?
I moved cautiously, my footsteps unnaturally loud on the parched earth. The sound came again, closer now, accompanied by a soft, almost inaudible weeping. Rounding a cluster of obsidian-like stones, I saw her.
