The air, if it could be called air, was thick with a silence that pressed in on my eardrums. It wasn’t the absence of sound, but a palpable weight, a void that swallowed any potential for noise. I stood on ground that felt like petrified ash, stretching out in an unbroken expanse under a sky the color of bruised twilight. No sun, no moon, just that perpetual, sickly luminescence. I’d woken here, or perhaps I’d simply *arrived*, with a gaping hole where my memories should have been. My name, Elias Thorne, was a whisper I’d found clinging to the edges of my awareness, a fragile raft in a sea of nothingness.
Chapter 5 had ended with me tracing a symbol, a knot of interlocking lines that seemed to hum with a latent energy. It was this symbol, etched into a shard of obsidian-like material, that had drawn me forward, away from the unsettling stillness. My fingers, still numb with disbelief, had followed the grooves, and as they did, a ripple had passed through the landscape. Not a tremor, but a subtle shift, like a tapestry being subtly rewoven. The ground beneath my feet seemed to deepen in hue, and the twilight sky flickered, as if a faulty bulb were struggling to maintain its glow.
And then, it appeared.
