The wind, if it could be called wind, carried no chill, no warmth, just a dry, rustling whisper that seemed to scrape against the edges of my awareness. It was the sound of something ancient and indifferent, a breath drawn by a lung that had never known life, only existence. I’d been walking for… I didn’t know how long. Time here was a concept as alien as the landscape itself. The ground beneath my worn boots was a fine, grey dust that shifted with every step, revealing nothing but more of the same. Jagged, obsidian-like formations rose from the plains at irregular intervals, their surfaces etched with symbols I’d seen before, etched into my mind as much as they were etched into the stone. They pulsed faintly, a dim, internal light that mimicked a heartbeat, but without the life it signified.

The silence was the worst. It wasn't an absence of sound, but a presence of stillness so profound it felt like a physical weight pressing in on me. No birdsong, no insect hum, no distant rumble of traffic, not even the sigh of trees. Just that dry, scraping whisper and the hollow echo of my own footsteps. These questions gnawed at me, a constant, dull ache behind my eyes. The symbols, though… they were a constant. I’d seen them in the rock formations, on the tattered remnants of my own clothes, even, I was sure, in the brief, dizzying visions that flashed through my mind. They were intricate, geometric, almost like a language, but a language I couldn't read, only recognize.
