The air thrummed with a low, persistent hum, a sound that seemed to vibrate not just in my ears, but in the very marrow of my bones. It was a subtle thing, easily missed if one wasn’t paying attention, and I found myself paying attention to *everything* these days. The strange symbols, etched into the grey, unyielding rock that formed this desolate landscape, had been the first to demand my focus. Now, it was the silence that pressed in, a silence so profound it felt like a physical weight, broken only by that unsettling hum and the ragged sound of my own breathing.
I’d been wandering for what felt like an eternity, though time here was a slippery concept, a phantom I couldn’t quite grasp. Each step was a gamble, each vista a fresh permutation of bleakness. Then I saw her. She emerged from the swirling mist like a wraith, her form indistinct at first, coalescing into something vaguely human, then resolving into a woman. Her eyes, wide and luminous, held a depth of confusion that mirrored my own.
“You,” she whispered, her voice a fragile thread against the oppressive quiet. “You’re real, aren’t you?”
