The air thrummed, a low, resonant hum that vibrated not just in my ears, but in the marrow of my bones. It was a sound that had become as familiar as my own heartbeat, a constant companion in this place that defied description. I’d grown accustomed to the oppressive stillness that often followed, the kind of silence that felt heavier than any noise. But today, the hum was different. It pulsed with an urgency, a frantic energy that made the hairs on my arms stand on end.

I was in the usual expanse of grey, a featureless void that stretched in every direction. The ground beneath my feet was a cool, yielding substance that felt like packed ash, yet left no mark. Above, the sky was a perpetual twilight, a bruised canvas of muted purples and dull oranges, devoid of sun or moon. It was a place of perpetual in-between, a purgatory that felt more like a prison.

And then, it happened. A flicker, a distortion in the air before me, like heat rising from asphalt on a summer day, but cold. It rippled, expanded, and for a breath-stopping moment, the grey world fractured. The hum intensified, a sonic shriek that tore through the placid silence. The twilight sky above seemed to rip open, not with a dramatic explosion, but with a subtle tearing, like fabric giving way.
