The air in Elysium, once a symphony of sweet, fresh promises, now held a subtle discord for Elara. It was the scent of manufactured purity, a fragrance too perfect to be entirely real. She stood with Anya at the edge of a vast, manicured park, where the Jasper mansions gleamed under the perpetual golden sky, a sky that now felt less like a blessing and more like a carefully constructed ceiling. The citizens, their faces smooth and unlined, moved with a placid grace that had once charmed her, but now seemed eerily vacant. Each smile was a practiced curve, each laugh a gentle, measured chime.

“They call it harmony,” Anya said, her voice barely a whisper, as if the very air itself might carry their dissent to the wrong ears. “But it’s the silence of suppressed song.”

Elara watched a group of children playing with luminous orbs that floated and reformed into intricate patterns. Their movements were precise, their interactions devoid of the boisterous, messy joy she remembered from her own village. Lyra, her sister, would have chased those orbs with unbridled delight, her laughter echoing like wind chimes. A pang of longing, sharp and sudden, tightened Elara’s chest.
