The air in the school cafeteria buzzed with the usual cacophony of chatter, clattering trays, and the distant whir of the vending machines. Jaylynn, still navigating the labyrinthine social currents of Northwood High, found a relatively quiet corner table, her sandwich a pale imitation of the comfort she craved. It had been weeks since her arrival, and while Krit Jackson’s antagonistic presence had softened from a daily barrage to an intermittent, unnerving gaze, the lingering tension was a constant hum beneath the surface of her new life.

Today, however, was different. Today, the shadow of Krit’s attention was momentarily eclipsed by a brighter, warmer light. Clive Jackson, Krit’s older brother, a name that had previously existed only in the periphery of her awareness, had approached her table. He wasn’t Krit, with his sharp edges and defiant smirk. Clive possessed a gentle aura, a calm that seemed to emanate from him like sunlight.

“Mind if I join you?” His voice was a smooth baritone, devoid of Krit’s rough edges, and his smile was open, disarming. He carried his tray with an ease that suggested he belonged, a stark contrast to Jaylynn’s own tentative posture.
