Clive watched them from across the courtyard, a tight knot forming in his chest. Jaylynn, her laughter like wind chimes caught on a summer breeze, was leaning into Krit, her hand resting lightly on his arm. Krit, usually so guarded, his gaze sharp and assessing, was smiling. A genuine, unguarded smile that Clive hadn't seen directed at anyone, let alone Jaylynn, until recently. It was a smile that spoke of a connection he, Clive, had desperately hoped to forge.

His own heart felt like a lead weight in his chest, a stark contrast to the lightness that seemed to emanate from the pair. He’d known, of course. The hushed whispers, the knowing glances from friends, the way Jaylynn’s eyes would sometimes drift towards Krit even when she was talking to him. But seeing it, truly seeing the undeniable pull between them, was a different kind of pain. It was the quiet, crushing realization that his pursuit, however earnest, had been a futile endeavor.

He’d tried. Oh, how he’d tried. He’d offered Jaylynn the gentle understanding, the steady companionship that he believed she deserved. He’d seen the spark of curiosity in her eyes when she first arrived, the way she’d navigated Krit’s initial hostility with a quiet resilience that had captivated him. He’d seen her vulnerability, her strength, her intelligence, and he’d fallen, completely and irrevocably, for the woman she was.
