A Brother's Plea

Clive, sensing the growing connection between Jaylynn and Krit, tries to reason with his brother. He also subtly expresses his own feelings, hoping Jaylynn will see him as the better choice.

Clive found Krit in the deserted corner of the school’s athletic field, the late afternoon sun casting long, distorted shadows that mirrored the turmoil in his younger brother’s eyes. Krit was kicking at a loose pebble, his shoulders hunched, a familiar storm brewing behind his usually defiant gaze. Clive approached slowly, the crunch of his own footsteps on the dry grass a gentle intrusion.

“Hey,” Clive said, his voice soft, careful not to startle him. Krit grunted, not looking up. “Heard you had another… *discussion* with Jaylynn today.”

Krit’s jaw tightened. “It wasn’t a discussion. She’s just… annoying.” The lie was thin, brittle. Clive knew that look, that forced bravado. It was the same mask Krit wore when he was cornered, when the carefully constructed walls around his heart threatened to crumble.
