The air in the hidden cellar hung thick and cloying, a stark contrast to the crisp, clean autumn breeze I usually savored. Dust motes danced in the meager shafts of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating the rows of shelves laden with forgotten tinctures and dried herbs. It was here, in this secret sanctuary beneath the city’s cobbled streets, that I worked, my hands stained with the vibrant hues of crushed petals and potent roots. Each patient I tended was a whispered prayer, a gamble against the suffocating fear that gripped our kingdom. They came to me broken, coughing, their skin mottled with the same creeping sickness that had turned the Royal Physicians’ faces ashen. And I, Elara, with my forbidden touch, offered them a flicker of hope.

Tonight, however, the usual comforting rhythm of my work was shattered by a tremor that ran not through the earth, but through the very essence of the place. A cold dread, sharp and unwelcome, prickled my skin. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. It was the same sensation I’d felt when Kael first appeared, a disquieting awareness of something beyond the ordinary.

“Elara?” Kael’s voice, a low rumble, cut through the silence. He stood at the cellar entrance, a silhouette against the faint glow of his lantern, his expression a mask of concern. The shadows clung to him, but they couldn’t dim the intensity in his eyes.
