The air in the hidden alcove of the city library, usually thick with the comforting scent of aged paper and dried ink, felt heavy tonight, tinged with a sorrow that had nothing to do with forgotten lore. Elara sat across from Old Man Hemlock, his face a roadmap of wrinkles etched by time and worry, his breath a shallow rasp. The herbs I’d brought, potent with the promise of easing his cough, lay untouched beside his gnarled hands. He was beyond my simple remedies now. The plague, that relentless shadow, had finally claimed him.

“It’s… the Queen,” Hemlock rasped, his voice barely a whisper. He’d been a scholar, a keeper of histories, and in his final hours, the weight of knowledge pressed down on him. “Her fear… it’s a cage. Built long ago.”

I leaned closer, my heart aching with a familiar blend of empathy and frustration. “What do you mean, Master Hemlock?”
