The grand hall of the Queen’s palace, usually a place of hushed reverence and the faint scent of polished wood, now thrummed with a different kind of tension. It was a heavy, suffocating blanket, woven from fear and suspicion. Sunlight, usually so eager to stream through the high, arched windows, seemed to hesitate, casting long, distorted shadows that danced like specters. I stood beside Kael, my heart a frantic bird trapped in my chest, each beat a desperate plea for courage. Before us, Queen Isolde sat upon her throne, her face a mask of regal severity, though I could see the flicker of unease in her sharp, intelligent eyes. Beside her, Lord Valerius stood, a picture of concerned loyalty, his smile a little too smooth, his posture a little too perfect.

“Your Majesty,” Kael’s voice, usually so steady and commanding, held a tremor of urgency that I felt deep in my bones. He held out a parchment, its edges singed, a testament to the desperate measures we had taken to retrieve it. “We have found proof.”

The Queen’s gaze fixed on the document, her fingers tightening around the jeweled armrest of her throne. “Proof of what, Captain? Of heresy? Of the very magic that plagues our kingdom?” Her voice was laced with a familiar, chilling fear.
