The sterile gleam of the interrogation room was a stark contrast to the usual opulent gilded cages of the palace. It was here, stripped of the usual trappings of power and privilege, that I felt most in my element. The air hummed with a low, electric tension, a familiar thrum that settled my nerves and sharpened my focus. Duke Alistair, the picture of aristocratic composure even in this stark setting, sat across from me, his gaze as cool and assessing as a hawk's. He was the linchpin, the one piece I needed to break, and I was ready to play my hand.

“You seem unusually calm, Your Grace,” I began, my voice low and even, the sound amplified by the room’s acoustics. I leaned forward, resting my forearms on the polished metal table. “Most men in your position would be… agitated.”

Alistair’s lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile. “And you, Miss Opal, are not most women. That is precisely why you were chosen, is it not? To handle the… unusual.”
