Chapter 8
Jade's Observation
Jade, a member of the court, watches Opal and Jake. Her composed demeanor hides a keen intellect. She notices the growing intimacy and the subtle manipulations within the royal family, her own motives unclear.
The gilded cage of the royal palace was a place of shadows and secrets, and I, Opal, was merely a new bird flitting through its opulent corridors. My assignment: Prince Jake. My mission: survival. But survival, I was quickly learning, was a far more complicated dance than I’d anticipated, especially when the prince himself was the most alluring distraction. Chapter 7 had ended with Queen Courtney’s unsettling solicitude, a mother’s concern cloaked in something I couldn’t quite place. Now, as I moved through the labyrinthine halls, a subtle shift in the atmosphere made the hairs on my arms prickle. It wasn’t a tangible threat, not yet, but a heightened awareness, a sense of being observed.
My gaze swept across the grand salon, a room designed to impress with its soaring ceilings and walls adorned with ancestral portraits. Sunlight streamed through impossibly tall windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air like tiny, frantic spirits. My eyes landed on Jade, perched on a velvet chaise lounge, a porcelain teacup held delicately in her hand. She was an enigma, a creature of silken gowns and carefully curated smiles. I’d seen her before, a fleeting presence at official functions, always elegant, always composed. Today, however, her stillness felt different. It was the stillness of a predator, not of repose.
She met my gaze, her eyes, the colour of a stormy sea, holding mine for a beat longer than politeness dictated. There was no discernible expression on her face, no hint of warmth or animosity, just an unnerving assessment. It was as if she were cataloging my every move, dissecting my purpose here. I gave a curt, professional nod, my hand instinctively resting near the concealed weapon beneath my tailored jacket. She inclined her head in return, a barely perceptible movement, and then her gaze drifted, not away, but towards Prince Jake.
