The clink of ice in my glass was the only sound that dared to break the suffocating silence of the private study. Outside, the palace grounds lay draped in an inky blackness, punctuated only by the distant, indifferent twinkle of stars. Inside, the air was thick with unspoken tensions, a palpable unease that had settled over me like a shroud since I’d first set foot within these gilded walls. Prince Jake was across the room, his back to me, a silhouette against the grand fireplace, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. He was supposed to be resting, but the restless energy radiating from him was a mirror to my own.
My fingers tightened around the cool glass, the condensation a welcome sensation against my skin. This assignment was supposed to be routine, albeit high-profile. Protect the heir, navigate the labyrinthine politics of the royal court, and return to my quiet life. Simple. Except it wasn’t. Not anymore. Not since Jake’s eyes had met mine across that crowded ballroom, igniting a spark that had quickly become a wildfire. And now, the whispers of a threat had coalesced into a chilling reality.
“You’re quiet tonight, Opal,” Jake’s voice, a low rumble, cut through the stillness. He turned, and the firelight caught the worry etched on his handsome features. It was a look I’d seen too often in the last few days, a look that made my jaw clench.
