The roaring engine of the private jet was a poor substitute for the screaming sirens that had been my constant companion for the last twenty-four hours. We were airborne, the cityscape shrinking below, a mosaic of lights that meant nothing to me now. All that mattered was the man beside me, his hand a steady anchor on my thigh, his gaze fixed on the darkness outside. Prince Jake. My charge. My… everything. The word itself felt like a betrayal of my professional code, a dangerous, intoxicating whisper in the sterile cabin.
"Are you alright?" His voice was a low rumble, cutting through the drone of the engines.
I nodded, a little too quickly. "Just… processing." Processing the near-death experience, the betrayal that had been staring us in the face, the fact that I was about to break every rule in the book for him. "Courtney was good. Too good."
