Escalating Danger
The unmasked traitor, cornered, makes a desperate final move. A direct assault on Jake and Opal is imminent. They must rely on each other, their love and trust their strongest weapons against the escalating threat.
The air crackled with a tension so thick I could taste it. Not the usual hum of palace security, no, this was a raw, primal fear that had settled deep in my gut. The traitor, unmasked, was cornered, but cornered animals were the most dangerous. His eyes, wide and wild, darted between Jake and me, a desperate cornered rat looking for an escape. We had him, but the victory tasted like ash.
“It’s over, Duke Alistair,” I said, my voice low and steady, a stark contrast to the frantic pounding in my chest. My hand was already on the butt of my sidearm, the cool metal a familiar comfort. Jake stood beside me, his jaw set, his usual princely grace replaced by a fierce determination that made my heart ache. He was no longer just my charge; he was mine to protect, mine to cherish.
Alistair let out a harsh, broken laugh. “Over? My dear bodyguard, it’s only just begun.” He lunged, not at me, but at a nearby table laden with delicate porcelain. With a guttural roar, he swept it aside, sending shards flying in every direction. It was a diversion, a desperate, pathetic attempt to buy himself time.
