The air in the grand ballroom had turned frigid, an icy contrast to the gilded opulence surrounding us. The strains of a string quartet, once a soothing balm, now felt like a discordant shriek, each note a betrayal. The trap had sprung, not with a bang, but with a chilling whisper that coiled around my heart like a serpent. It had been so close, so perfectly orchestrated, that for a fraction of a second, I’d allowed myself to believe we were safe. A fool’s paradise, I now knew.
The Duke. It was always the Duke. The man who had been the picture of loyal service, the trusted confidant, the one person I’d pegged as a potential ally, albeit a cautious one. His smile, usually a benevolent curve, had contorted into something sharp and predatory, his eyes, once warm pools of concern, now glinted with a cold, calculating malice. He stood there, not ten feet from where Jake and I were being hustled into a secure alcove, his hand outstretched, not in assistance, but in a gesture of finality.
“It’s over, Prince,” the Duke’s voice, smoother than aged whiskey, now dripped with venom. “Your reign, your life… all of it.”
