For weeks, the conversations had been circling this elusive concept, this “first love” Samuel spoke of, a love that existed before she did, a love that wasn't earned or deserved, but simply *was*. “It’s like… I hear the words, Samuel,” Elara began, her voice barely a whisper, laced with the familiar frustration that had shadowed her for so long. “I hear you talk about how God loved us first, before we ever loved Him, before we even knew to look for love. But my mind… it just rebels. It’s like a child who’s been told a fairy tale and knows, deep down, that it can’t be real. How can love exist without a reason? Without something to be loved *for*?”
Samuel smiled, a gentle crinkle appearing at the corners of his eyes. He reached for his teacup, the porcelain warm against his fingers. “Ah, Elara, that’s precisely where the world has taught us to look, isn’t it? We’re conditioned to believe love is a transaction. You do this, you get that. You are this, you are loved that much. And so, when we hear of a love that asks for nothing, that simply *gives*, it feels alien, even suspect.”
