A Pattern Emerges
Eleanor, driven by her intellect, starts noticing a pattern in the 'supernatural' events. They seem too coincidental, too staged, leading her to suspect a deliberate orchestration.
The flickering gaslight of the town square cast long, dancing shadows that did little to dispel the encroaching gloom of the late October afternoon. Eleanor Vance, her brow furrowed in concentration, traced a line across the worn pages of her notebook. The air was thick with the scent of fallen leaves and the distant, sweet-and-spicy aroma of mulled cider, but for Eleanor, the prevailing fragrance was one of calculated deception. The events that had been plaguing Oakhaven over the past week, initially dismissed as the boisterous pranks of overzealous teens or the overactive imaginations of superstitious townsfolk, were beginning to coalesce into something far more deliberate.
She’d meticulously cataloged each incident: the disembodied whispers that seemed to slither from the ancient oak by the cemetery gates, the inexplicable chill that had descended upon the library’s reading room, the sudden, violent gust of wind that had scattered the carefully arranged pumpkins at Mrs. Gable’s stand, nearly knocking her over. Individually, they could be attributed to a myriad of natural or human causes. But viewed collectively, a disquieting order began to assert itself.
Sarah, perched on the edge of the wrought-iron bench beside her, shivered, pulling her knitted cardigan tighter. "It's getting colder," she murmured, her voice barely audible above the rustle of leaves underfoot. "Just like Old Man Hemlock said. The veil is thinning."
