Eleanor found herself staring out her kitchen window, the steam from her teacup fogging the glass, mirroring the hazy certainty that had begun to settle over her. The town, usually abuzz with preparations for the annual Halloween festival, seemed to hold its breath, the unsettling events casting a pall over the festive spirit.

Sheriff Brody's office was, as always, impeccably tidy. The scent of lemon polish and old paper hung in the air, a comforting aroma that usually spoke of order and calm. Today, however, it felt almost too sterile, too controlled. Eleanor watched as Sheriff Brody, a man whose placid demeanor was as familiar to the town as the clock tower’s chime, meticulously examined a photograph of the scarecrow. His movements were deliberate, his brow furrowed in a picture of professional concern.

"Another odd one, Eleanor," he said, his voice a low rumble, devoid of any real surprise. It was as if he’d expected this, as if the bizarre tableau was merely another item on his daily to-do list. "Chained to the old oak by the creek. No witnesses, of course. Just… there."
