The air in Oakhaven had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken tension that clung to the ancient oaks like Spanish moss. Eleanor, usually so grounded, found herself scanning the periphery, a prickle of unease tracing its way up her spine. Sarah, beside her, was a study in nervous anticipation, her fingers twisting the worn strap of her messenger bag. Their visit to Old Man Hemlock had been a last resort, born from a shared exhaustion with the escalating strangeness and a desperate need for answers that the local authorities, or at least Sheriff Brody’s calm, dismissive reassurances, weren’t providing.

Hemlock’s cottage was as rumored: a ramshackle structure that seemed to have grown organically from the very earth it stood upon, nestled deep within a copse of pines on the outskirts of town. The scent of woodsmoke and something vaguely earthy, like damp soil after a rain, permeated the air long before they reached the sagging porch. A single, grimy window peered out from beneath a moss-laden roof, like a rheumy eye surveying the encroaching twilight.

Eleanor hesitated, a knot of apprehension tightening in her stomach. She’d always been a pragmatist, a creature of logic and observable fact. Old Man Hemlock, with his reputation for speaking in riddles and communing with things unseen, felt like a relic from a different, less rational era. Sarah, however, nudged her forward, her gaze fixed on the dark, imposing silhouette of the house.
