The air in Havenwood had always held a certain crispness, a scent of pine and damp earth that Eleanor Vance had found rather pleasant upon her arrival. Now, however, that familiar aroma seemed tinged with something else, something acrid and unsettling, like smoke from a fire that refused to be extinguished. It clung to the edges of the town, a subtle but persistent miasma that mirrored the growing unease among its residents. The annual Halloween festival, once a beacon of communal joy, was fast becoming a source of palpable dread.

The previous night’s incident had been more than just a childish prank, as Eleanor had initially so readily dismissed it. The carefully arranged stones, forming a crude, unsettling effigy on the town square’s bandstand, had been discovered at dawn. They were not haphazardly piled, but deliberately placed, each stone bearing a faint, almost imperceptible etching that, in the pale morning light, seemed to form a series of jagged, archaic symbols. Eleanor, ever the pragmatist, had attributed it to bored teenagers with too much time and a penchant for theatrics. But the sheer meticulousness, the quiet artistry of the macabre display, had lodged a tiny splinter of doubt in the otherwise solid edifice of her skepticism.

She found Sarah already at their usual table at the Rusty Kettle diner, the scent of brewing coffee and sizzling bacon doing little to lift the shadow that seemed to have settled around her friend. Sarah’s usually bright eyes were clouded, her fingers tracing the rim of her untouched mug as if seeking solace in its worn ceramic.
