The Halloween festival is in full swing. Amidst the revelry and costumes, Eleanor and Sarah attempt to expose Sheriff Brody, leading to a chaotic and dangerous confrontation.

The air thrummed with a giddy, manufactured fear. Lanterns, carved with grinning, toothy faces, cast flickering pools of orange light onto the cobblestone streets. The town square, usually a placid heart, pulsed with a vibrant, chaotic energy. Costumes, a kaleidoscope of monsters, ghouls, and fantastical creatures, swirled around Eleanor and Sarah like a fever dream. Children shrieked with delight, their parents’ laughter a counterpoint to the distant, mournful wail of a foghorn from the harbor. It was the Halloween festival, the culmination of weeks of unease, and it was, Eleanor had to admit, a spectacle.

But beneath the surface of manufactured merriment, a current of genuine apprehension flowed, a current Eleanor had been so determined to dismiss. Now, watching the throngs of people, the elaborate decorations designed to evoke the very legends she’d scoffed at, she felt a prickle of something akin to unease. Sarah, beside her, was practically vibrating with a nervous energy that went beyond the thrill of the festival. Her eyes darted around, scanning faces, flinching at sudden noises, her hand clutching Eleanor’s arm with a grip that spoke volumes.

“Are you sure about this, El?” Sarah’s voice was barely a whisper, lost in the din. “It’s… it’s so crowded. And Brody is everywhere.”
