Chapter 17
A Dangerous Confrontation
Armed with the truth, Eleanor and Sarah attempt to confront Sheriff Brody. The conversation is fraught with peril, as Brody reveals the depth of his vengeful plan.
The air in Eleanor’s small cottage, usually a sanctuary of quiet reason, felt thick and charged, like the moments before a storm breaks. Sarah sat opposite her, her hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The flickering lamplight cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with a life of their own, mocking Eleanor’s insistence on logic. The crumpled piece of paper, Sheriff Brody’s own handwriting scrawled across it, lay between them – a damning testament to the carefully constructed charade.
“He wrote it, Eleanor,” Sarah whispered, her voice raspy with a mixture of fear and grim certainty. “He admitted it. Or, well, he admitted to *knowing* about the… the arrangements. The timing. The way things were supposed to look.”
Eleanor picked up the paper, her fingers tracing the bold, confident loops of Brody’s signature. It had been tucked away in a dusty file in the town hall’s archives, a file she’d almost overlooked, a file that seemed to contain nothing but mundane records of past festivals. But nestled within, a single, starkly out-of-place memo, detailing specific timings for the “minor disruptions” that had plagued the town in the weeks leading up to the festival. Disruptions Sarah had been convinced were the work of a vengeful spirit, but which Eleanor had dismissed as elaborate pranks. Now, the chilling clarity of Brody’s careful planning laid bare his true intentions.
