Halloween, the town’s beloved festival, was a mere handful of hours away, and the final preparations were in full swing. Garlands of orange and black draped across storefronts, pumpkins, carved with wicked grins and mournful stares, lined doorsteps, and the scent of cinnamon and woodsmoke mingled with the fainter, sharper tang of decaying leaves. Yet, beneath the festive veneer, a different kind of anticipation had taken root, one laced with a gnawing unease. Eleanor Vance felt it most keenly, a prickle of dread that no amount of logical reasoning could dispel.

She stood on the porch of her rented cottage, watching Sarah dart around the small garden, her movements frantic. Sarah was a whirlwind of nervous energy, her usually bright eyes shadowed with a fear that had deepened with each passing day. The unsettling events, once easily dismissed as elaborate pranks, now felt like deliberate, calculated moves. The whispers of the town’s founding ghost, once folklore relegated to dusty library shelves, now seemed to breathe in the chill air, their spectral fingers brushing against the edges of reality.

“Are you sure about this, Sarah?” Eleanor asked, her voice softer than she intended. She hated the tremor of doubt that had begun to infiltrate her own skepticism.
