The flickering gaslight cast long, dancing shadows across the sheriff’s office, painting Sheriff Brody’s normally jovial face in stark, unsettling relief. Eleanor watched him, her gaze sharp, dissecting the easy confidence with which he recounted his latest fruitless search for the source of the recent disturbances. He spoke of dead ends and phantom footprints, of a town spooked by its own folklore, and Eleanor, for the first time, felt a prickle of unease that had nothing to do with ghosts.

“Another night, another phantom,” Brody sighed, leaning back in his worn leather chair. He ran a hand over his close-cropped hair, a gesture that usually conveyed weary competence, but now seemed… rehearsed. “Folks are getting worked up, Eleanor. And I can’t say I blame them. This replica of the Candlewick Man’s mask… it’s disturbing. Truly disturbing.”

Sarah, perched on the edge of a hard wooden chair beside Eleanor, shifted her weight. Her eyes, usually bright with a kind of earnest belief, were clouded with a growing dread. “But Sheriff,” she began, her voice a little too high, “don’t you think it’s strange that all these things are happening now? Right before the festival? It’s like… like someone is trying to recreate the legend.”
