The faded photograph, tucked away in the dusty ledger, felt impossibly fragile in Eleanor’s gloved fingers. It depicted a group of stern-faced individuals, their Victorian attire stiff and formal, gathered before what looked like a freshly built, though now dilapidated, gazebo. Sarah leaned closer, her breath misting the glass of the frame Eleanor had carefully placed on the table of the town's minuscule historical society archives. The air in the room was thick with the scent of aging paper and dried flowers, a perfume of forgotten lives.

“This is it, isn’t it?” Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible above the gentle hum of the fluorescent lights. “The founding families. The gazebo… that’s where it happened, isn’t it? The story my grandmother always told me, but never the details.”

Eleanor traced the outline of one of the figures in the photograph. A woman, her face obscured by shadow and the grain of the image, stood slightly apart from the others, her posture rigid, almost defiant. “The ledger calls this ‘The Founding Ceremony, 1888.’ No mention of any tragedy here.” She flipped through the brittle pages, her brow furrowed. “It’s all very… mundane. Land deeds, council minutes, the usual small-town bureaucracy.”
