The chill of the late October air had a way of seeping into Eleanor’s bones, a sensation she usually welcomed as a fitting prelude to Halloween. But lately, the crispness felt less like an invitation to autumnal revelry and more like a shroud, muffling the usual vibrant pulse of Oakhaven. The town square, usually a riot of orange and black bunting, felt subdued, the carved pumpkins on porches seeming to grin with a touch of unease.

Sarah, ever the optimist, had tried to inject some levity earlier that afternoon. “Come on, Ellie,” she’d chirped, her voice a little too bright, “we can’t let a few spooky happenings spoil the spirit of the season. Think of it as Oakhaven’s way of getting into character.”

Eleanor had offered a tight smile, her gaze sweeping over the darkened windows of the general store, a place that had been the site of the latest unsettling incident. A few days prior, Mrs. Gable, the owner, had found her entire stock of candy corn inexplicably rearranged into a macabre, grinning face overnight. The police, Sheriff Brody at the helm, had chalked it up to a particularly ambitious prank. Eleanor, however, felt a prickle of something more. A prank, yes, but one with a strange, deliberate precision that felt less like youthful mischief and more like… a statement.
