The air in Eleanor’s small rented cottage, usually a sanctuary of quiet logic, felt thick with unspoken things. Sarah sat opposite her, her usual bright spark dimmed, her fingers tracing the rim of a chipped mug. The flickering lamplight cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock Eleanor’s insistence on rational explanations. Outside, the wind sighed through the skeletal branches of the oak trees, a mournful sound that Sarah had declared was the ‘town holding its breath.’

“You’re not telling me everything, Sarah,” Eleanor said, her voice gentle but firm. She watched Sarah’s guarded expression, the way her gaze kept darting to the window as if expecting a spectral visitor. This was the fifth unsettling incident in as many weeks. The overturned grave markers in the old cemetery, the disembodied whispers heard near the abandoned mill, the unnerving series of ‘pranks’ that felt less like teenage mischief and more like calculated disturbances. Eleanor had attributed them all to elaborate hoaxes, but Sarah’s conviction was a growing weight.

Sarah sighed, a sound heavy with a weariness that went beyond the late hour. “It’s… complicated, Eleanor. Some things are best left buried.”
