The digital tendrils of Axle Mckracken’s panic were beginning to fray. She felt it, a prickling unease that started at the base of her skull and snaked down her spine, settling into a cold knot in her stomach. The Baby. The name itself felt like a phantom limb, an ache she couldn't quite place but knew was there, watching, waiting. She’d been careless. So damn careless. That little slip-up, that flicker of ego in leaving a signature on that financial exchange server, it had been enough. Enough for the ghost to find her.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, a frantic dance against an invisible clock. She needed to scrub, to obliterate, to vanish. But the more she tried to erase, the more the digital dust seemed to swirl, revealing the very pathways she’d so desperately tried to conceal. A predator playing with its prey before the final bite.

"Damn it!" Axle slammed her fist on the desk, the cheap particleboard groaning in protest. The ramshackle apartment, her sanctuary and her prison, vibrated with her frustration. Empty energy drink cans and discarded snack wrappers formed a grim landscape around her. This was it. The end of the line. Vector would be furious. Fnckes would probably just laugh. But The Baby… The Baby would simply note her failure and move on. That was the worst part. The utter indifference.
