The city was a symphony of chaos, a discordant hum of sirens and the distant roar of collapsing structures. Kai Tanaka navigated the debris-strewn streets with a practiced ease, his movements fluid and precise, a stark contrast to the panicked throngs surging around him. He was a phantom weaving through a nightmare, his eyes, sharp and restless, scanning every shadow, every flicker of movement. The air, thick with dust and the acrid tang of fear, seemed to cling to him, a tangible presence.
He’d always been good at reading the currents, the invisible flows of a city. But this was different. This was a tempest, and he, somehow, was at its eye. The sphere, cool and impossibly smooth against his palm, pulsed with a faint, almost imperceptible vibration. It was a whisper, a promise, a terrifying responsibility. Air. His element.
He’d found it, or perhaps it had found him, amidst the pandemonium of the market district. While others scrambled for shelter, for supplies, for any semblance of normalcy, Kai had been drawn to a shimmering anomaly, a vortex of wind that seemed to materialize out of nowhere. He’d reached out, not with thought, but with instinct, and the sphere had nestled into his hand as if it belonged there. Then came the rush, a dizzying surge of power, the world snapping into sharp focus, every gust of wind, every distant whisper, suddenly understandable.
