They had descended into the earth’s crust, a journey far more perilous than any of them had anticipated. The air grew thick, heavy with the scent of minerals and an alien tang that prickled the back of her throat. The light from their makeshift torches did little to pierce the oppressive darkness, revealing only jagged rock formations and the unsettling glint of strange, metallic veins pulsing with an unnatural light.

“Are we sure this is the way?” Kai’s voice, usually so full of cocky bravado, was tight with a tension that mirrored Anya’s own unease. He flicked his wrist, sending a gust of wind that swirled around them, momentarily pushing back the suffocating atmosphere.

Lena, ever the calm anchor, consulted a device that glowed with intricate patterns. “The energy readings are strongest in this direction. Whatever they’re doing, it’s centered deep within the mantle.” Her brow was furrowed, her usual analytical gaze clouded with a grim determination.
