The desert wind, a constant, mournful whisper, seemed to carry the scent of more than just sand and exhaust fumes. It carried a premonition, a low hum of unease that vibrated beneath the glitz and neon of Las Vegas. Christopher, perched in the opulent penthouse that had once belonged to a ghost, felt it too, a prickle on the back of his neck that no amount of expensive liquor could soothe. He stared out at the city, a sprawling tapestry of light and shadow, and a knot tightened in his gut. He was winning, wasn’t he? The empire he’d meticulously built, brick by bloody brick, was expanding, its tendrils reaching into every dark corner. Yet, the taste of victory was starting to curdle, tinged with the metallic tang of fear.

Downstairs, the muffled thrum of a bass line pulsed through the polished concrete floors. Marcus, ever the pragmatist, was hosting one of their “business meetings,” which usually translated to a gathering of men who understood the language of loyalty and consequence. Christopher had given Marcus more leeway lately, recognizing the man’s innate ability to smooth over rough edges, to be the steady hand when his own began to tremble. He’d learned that ruthlessness alone, while effective, was a blunt instrument. Marcus was the scalpel, precise and deadly.

A soft knock on the door broke through his reverie. Felicia. His heart, a stubborn, recalcitrant thing, leaped at the sound. She always smelled of something clean and hopeful, a stark contrast to the stale, perfumed air of his world. He opened the door, and her smile, a beacon in the encroaching gloom, instantly softened the hard edges of his resolve.
