The desert sun, a molten orb bleeding across the bruised twilight sky, offered no solace. It merely amplified the heat that clung to Christopher’s skin, a clammy reminder of the Vegas he now called home. Success, a heady wine, had turned bitter on his tongue. The empire he’d so meticulously built, brick by brick from the dust of desperation, was starting to crumble under the weight of its own shadow. Whispers, once a distant hum, had crescendoed into a disquieting murmur, and the murmur was coalescing into a name: Mike "the goon."
He sat in the plush, dimly lit back room of a high-end lounge, the kind where the air was thick with expensive cologne and the hushed tones of deals being struck in the dark. Marcus, his shadow and confidant, nursed a whiskey, his gaze fixed on the swirling amber liquid. The usual easy camaraderie between them felt strained, stretched thin like a worn rubber band.
“Heard anything?” Christopher asked, his voice low, rough around the edges like unpolished stone. He traced the rim of his own untouched glass, the ice clinking a nervous rhythm against the crystal.
