The desert wind, a dry whisper against the tinted glass of the Lincoln, carried the scent of exhaust and something vaguely metallic, like old blood. Christopher watched the familiar, glittering sprawl of Las Vegas recede in the rearview mirror, a city that had once promised everything and now felt like a gilded cage. Beside him, Marcus, his face a carefully constructed mask of calm, navigated the late-night traffic with practiced ease.
“You’re quiet tonight, Chris,” Marcus said, his voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the silence.
Christopher didn’t turn. He was too busy tracing the faint scar above his eyebrow, a souvenir from a night he’d tried to bury deep. “Just thinking.”
