The desert air, usually a dry balm, felt heavy and suffocating. Christopher stood on the balcony of his new penthouse, the city lights of Las Vegas a sprawling, indifferent tapestry below. It had been months since the ambush, months since the cold kiss of steel had reminded him of how easily a life could be extinguished. Felicia was asleep inside, a soft, steady presence in the quiet of their shared space, a stark contrast to the tempest that still brewed within him. He traced the faint scar on his ribs, a phantom ache that flared whenever the silence grew too profound. Mike "the goon" was supposed to be a ghost, a bad memory relegated to the shadows of his past. But ghosts, he was learning, had a stubborn way of clinging.

Marcus had been adamant. "He's cornered, Chris. A wounded animal is the most dangerous. He'll lash out." Christopher had dismissed it then, too caught up in the dizzying rush of legitimate business, of building something real with Felicia. But the unease had been a constant hum beneath the surface, a low-frequency thrum that vibrated in his bones.

He’d traded the roar of the engine for the hum of servers, the glint of chrome for the gleam of polished wood in his new office. The transition hadn't been seamless. Every handshake felt like a test, every contract a potential trap. He’d poured everything he’d made into legitimate ventures – a string of upscale lounges, a boutique hotel on the edge of the Strip. Felicia, her eyes shining with a hope he’d never dared to imagine for himself, had been his anchor, her quiet strength a constant reminder of what he was fighting for.
