The desert air, usually a dry, biting caress, felt thick and heavy, clinging to Christopher like a shroud. Las Vegas, the city that had promised him everything, now felt like a gilded cage. The swagger he’d once worn like a second skin had frayed, replaced by a gnawing unease. Leaving the game, as Marcus had so casually put it, was proving to be less a dignified exit and more a desperate scramble through a minefield.
