The sterile scent of the hospital room did little to mask the lingering metallic tang of blood that clung to Christopher’s senses. Felicia’s hand, cool and steady, was a constant anchor in the swirling fog of his pain and regret. Her presence was a quiet, unwavering testament to the grace he’d so desperately needed, the grace he’d barely dared to believe in. He watched her, the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the way her brow furrowed in concern, and a profound ache settled in his chest, a different kind of pain, one born of love and the stark realization of what he stood to lose.

“You’re awake,” Felicia whispered, her voice raspy with fatigue, but laced with a relief so potent it felt like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. She squeezed his hand, her eyes, usually so vibrant, now held a weariness that mirrored his own.
