He’d chased the gleam of success, the intoxicating rush of power, and for what? To lie here, a broken man, with the phantom scent of blood still clinging to his senses.

Felicia’s hand, cool and steady, rested on his own. Her presence was a fragile anchor in the swirling vortex of his pain and regret. Her eyes, usually so bright, were shadowed with a weariness that mirrored his own, yet the love that shone from them was a beacon, unwavering. He’d seen that light before, a flicker in the neon glare, a quiet promise in the midst of his chaos. Now, it was the only thing that felt real.

“Christopher,” she whispered, her voice a silken thread against the hum of the machines. “You’re awake.”
