The desert air, usually a dry, comforting caress against Christopher’s skin, felt thick and suffocating. The neon glow of the Strip, a beacon of his hard-won empire, seemed to bleed into the encroaching darkness, painting the sky in garish hues of pink and electric blue. He’d been driving, the windows down, the familiar hum of his luxury sedan a balm against the gnawing unease that had been his constant companion for weeks. Felicia’s laughter, a melody he’d been replaying in his mind, was the last pure sound he’d registered before the world exploded.

It was a symphony of chaos. The sharp crack of gunfire ripped through the night, a sound far more visceral than any he’d orchestrated. He felt a searing pain, a violent jolt that threw him against the steering wheel, the airbag deploying with a deafening hiss. Another shot, then another, shattering the tempered glass, sending shards flying like shrapnel. He heard the screech of tires, the guttural roar of engines closing in. This wasn’t a warning. This was an annihilation.

His vision blurred, the vibrant cityscape dissolving into a kaleidoscope of red and black. He tried to push himself up, to fight, but his body betrayed him. A heavy, wet warmth spread across his chest, his breath catching in ragged gasps. The metallic tang of blood filled his mouth. He heard the thud of car doors slamming, the heavy tread of boots on asphalt, the cold, hard glint of malice in the voices that echoed around him.
