Chapter 4

Whispers from the Cell

Driven by a gnawing frustration and an almost feverish resolve, Angela makes a controversial decision: she will visit Gary Ridgeway in prison. The thought terrifies her, but the need for answers outweighs her fear. She envisions confronting him, demanding to know if he knows who is replicating his crimes. Sheriff Miller vehemently opposes the idea, warning her of Ridgeway's manipulative nature. Undeterred, Angela arranges the visit, steeling herself for the encounter. She walks into the sterile visiting room, the air thick with unspoken menace, ready to play a dangerous game with a man who has carved his name into Seattle's darkest history. She is not prepared for the psychological chess match that is about to begin.

The sterile scent of disinfectant clawed at Angela’s throat, a stark contrast to the damp earth and decaying leaves that clung to her memory of that night. The prison visiting room was a study in muted tones – beige walls, grey linoleum, the dull sheen of stainless steel. It was a place designed to strip away identity, to reduce men to numbers and their crimes to sterile data. But Gary Ridgeway, even here, was more than just a number. He was a phantom, a specter that had haunted her entire life, and now, he was the only door she could imagine opening.

Sheriff Miller’s words echoed in her mind, a gravelly rumble of concern. "He’ll eat you alive, Angie. He feeds on this kind of attention." He’d pleaded, he’d argued, he’d even threatened to pull her off the case. But his warnings, meant to protect, had only fanned the flames of her desperation. He didn’t understand. He couldn’t. He hadn’t lived with the gnawing emptiness, the unanswered questions that had been her constant companions for twenty-five years. He hadn’t seen the faces of the new victims, their stories so chillingly identical to the ones that had scarred Seattle decades ago.

The guard, a hulking man with eyes that had seen too much, gestured her toward a booth. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She smoothed down her jacket, a futile attempt to regain a composure that felt as fragile as a spiderweb. The air crackled with anticipation, a low hum of dread that settled deep in her bones.
