Chapter 14

The Interrogation

Following a lead from Ridgeway's family tree and a hint from her mother's journal, Angela zeroes in on a suspect with a tenuous, yet significant, connection to Gary Ridgeway. The interrogation room is tense, the air thick with suspicion. The suspect, a man named David, is evasive, his answers laced with a disturbing mix of fear and defiance. He admits to knowing Ridgeway peripherally, but denies any involvement in the murders. However, under Angela’s relentless questioning, fragments of a deeply disturbed psyche emerge—a warped admiration for Ridgeway, a sense of injustice, and a hidden agenda that hints at more than just imitation. Angela senses she's close, but David is a master of misdirection.

The fluorescent lights of the interrogation room hummed, a sterile, insistent drone that seemed to vibrate in Angela’s teeth. David sat across from her, a man constructed of sharp angles and nervous energy. His eyes, the color of a stormy sea, darted around the room, never settling on her face for more than a flicker. “David,” Angela began, her voice a low, steady current in the room’s oppressive silence. “We’ve been over this. You knew Gary Ridgeway.”

He shifted in his chair, the cheap plastic groaning under his weight. “Knew of him. Everyone knew of him back then. He was… a local legend, in a sick way.” His voice was reedy, lacking conviction.
