Chapter 10
Twisted Legacy
Angela dives into Gary Ridgeway's family tree, a tangled web of strained relationships and forgotten kin. She’s looking for anyone who might have felt wronged, overlooked, or who harbors a deep-seated resentment towards Ridgeway or his legacy. The research is grim, uncovering stories of addiction, abandonment, and mental instability. She interviews distant relatives, their testimonies fragmented and often unreliable, but gradually, a picture begins to form of someone deeply affected by Ridgeway’s notoriety, someone who might see his crimes not as atrocities, but as a twisted inheritance. The search for a motive becomes a descent into a dark family history.
The air in the dusty archives hung heavy, thick with the scent of decaying paper and the ghosts of lives long past. Angela traced the faded ink of a birth certificate, the looping script a stark contrast to the brutal reality it represented. Gary Ridgeway. The name itself was a noxious bloom, its tendrils wrapping around Seattle’s underbelly, suffocating decency. And now, its poisoned petals were unfurling again, a new killer blooming in its shadow.
Angela’s fingers, stained with the faint grey of old newsprint, moved from the birth certificate to a fragile, yellowed newspaper clipping. A wedding announcement. Ridgeway, younger, a ghost of a man before the darkness consumed him. Beside him, a woman with a brittle smile, her eyes holding a hint of something Angela recognized – a desperate hope that flickered and died. The search for the copycat had led her here, to the root of the rot, to the tangled, diseased family tree of the Green River Killer.
Sheriff Miller had warned her. “This is a deep dive, Angie. You’re not just looking for a killer; you’re digging through a graveyard of broken people.” He’d said it with that familiar weariness etched around his eyes, the same eyes that had seen her mother vanish into the Seattle mist, the same eyes that had found a six-year-old Angela clutching a tattered teddy bear. He’d raised her, a silent promise etched into his soul, a promise to find the answers that had eluded him for so long. But this obsession, this burning need to connect the present horror to the past trauma, it was a dangerous current, threatening to pull her under.
