The silence in the village was a heavy blanket, muffling the usual cheerful sounds of children at play and the gentle hum of daily life. It had settled after the terrible night, a quiet born of sorrow and disbelief. Granny Mama, who had always been the sun around which their small world orbited, was gone. Her cozy cottage, usually a beacon of warmth and laughter, now stood still and somber, a painful reminder of what had been lost.

The children, their faces etched with a sadness that seemed too deep for their young years, gathered in their secret spot by the whispering willow tree. Usually, this was a place of giggles and shared secrets, of dreams whispered on the wind. Today, tears mingled with the dappled sunlight that filtered through the leaves. Lily, her eyes red-rimmed, clutched a smooth, grey stone she’d found in Granny Mama’s garden. “She always said,” Lily’s voice trembled, “that even the smallest stone has a story to tell, if you listen closely.”
